Transformative Works and Cultures

This has already made the rounds of wordpress and livejournal, but I’ll add my excited two cents here. The first edition of the new, peer-reviewed journal of fan studies, Transformative Works and Cultures, has just been released. It’s available, entirely open access, here. I’m thrilled to have an essay on genre discourse in fandom in the Theory section. And there’s a thoughtful review by Mary Dalton of Teen Television…. and, on top of that, the workshop on issues of gender in fan studies that I participated in at Console-ing Passions is included as a podcast.

But far more than my own contributions, the breadth and depth, and sense of dynamic conversation in this first volume of TWC is invigorating. Take the time to check it out, and, if you’re so inclined, consider submitting to their next CFP, on Games as Transformative Works.

Finally, a big thank you to the editors of TWC, Karen Hellekson and Kristina Busse, for all your work! I hope you are popping open the champagne and/or giving yourselves a big pat on the back. It means so much to fan studies to have a journal of this caliber and with this much potential to stimulate future conversation.
